Horrors of SNAP? In France and the United States, people of low SES spend between 25%-29% of their household income on food, but as money becomes accessible, only 11%-22% of their income is spent on food - Darmon & Drewnowski (2015) In 2013 the SNAP program - that helps to feed millions of underprivileged Americans - almost lost 40 billion dollars due to a disagreement over legislature between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party - Vaughn (2017) In recent news, the SNAP program started to transform into “Harvest Box,” a new initiative set by the current U.S. administration. Rather than letting people buy what is the best for their family as was the case with SNAP, “Harvest Box” is a pre-packaged unit filled with what policy makers think is good enough for people who depend on government programs to sustain themselves - Dewey 2018

Policy makers have claimed that being located in food deserts are the cause of food insecurity and the resulting obesity epidemic, but there have only been mixed results from the little research that has been done so far and just because healthy food is available, doesn’t mean that peop
